Shape-Based Features for Cat Ganglion Retinal Cells Classification
نویسندگان
چکیده
T his article presents a quantitative and objective approach to cat ganglion cell characterization and classification. The combination of several biologically relevant features such as diameter, eccentricity, fractal dimension, influence histogram, influence area, convex hull area, and convex hull diameter are derived from geometrical transforms and then processed by three different clustering methods (Ward’s hierarchical scheme, K-means and genetic algorithm), whose results are then combined by a voting strategy. These experiments indicate the superiority of some features and also suggest some possible biological implications.

Automated Morphometric Analysis of the Cat Retinal Α/y , Β/x and Δ Ganglion Cells Using Wavelet Statistical Moment and Clustering Algorithms
Computational morphological analysis comprises the development of measures (indicators) that describe different form attributes of a neuron and provides additional parameters for classification algorithms. Our work addressed the problem of small group sizes often encountered in neuromorphological and neurophysiological research, automated classification tasks (unsupervised learning) and introdu...
متن کاملNeuromorphometric characterization with shape functionals.
This work presents a procedure to extract morphological information from neuronal cells based on the variation of shape functionals as the cell geometry undergoes a dilation through a wide interval of spatial scales. The targeted shapes are alpha and beta cat retinal ganglion cells, which are characterized by different ranges of dendritic field diameter. Image functionals are expected to act as...
متن کاملClassification of Cat Ganglion Retinal Cells and Implications for Shape-Function Relationship
This article presents a quantitative approach to ganglion cell classification by considering combinations of several geometrical features including fractal dimension, symmetry, diameter, eccentricity and convex hull. Special attention is given to moment and symmetrybased features. Several combinations of such features are fed to two clustering methods (Ward’s hierarchical scheme and K-Means) an...
متن کاملRelay of receptive-field properties in dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus of the cat.
THE DORSAL lateral geniculate nucleus (LGNd) of the cat is a principal relay nucleus on the direct pathway from the retina to the visual cortex, and several parameters of its organization as a relay are well established. First, relay cells of the LGNd have either onor off-center receptive fields (16), because each relay cell receives direct excitatory drive from either onor off-center retinal g...
متن کاملStructure/function relationships of retinal ganglion cells in the cat.
Intracellular recording and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) iontophoresis was used to define structure/function relationships for single retinal ganglion cells in the intact cat eye. Fifteen physiologically characterized cells were labeled as follows. Five W-cells had gamma morphology, 6 X-cells had beta morphology, and 1 Y-cell had alpha morphology, and these relationships support earlier conclus...
